Diego Velazquez
Spanish Baroque Era Painter, 1599-1660
Spanish painter. He was one of the most important European artists of the 17th century, spending his career from 1623 in the service of Philip IV of Spain. His early canvases comprised bodegones and religious paintings, but as a court artist he was largely occupied in executing portraits, while also producing some historical, mythological and further religious works. His painting was deeply affected by the work of Rubens and by Venetian artists, especially Titian, as well as by the experience of two trips (1629-31 and 1649-51) to Italy. Under these joint influences he developed a uniquely personal style characterized by very loose, expressive brushwork. Although he had no immediate followers, he was greatly admired by such later painters as Goya and Manet Related Paintings of Diego Velazquez :. | A Dwarf Holding a Tome on his Lap (Don Diego de Acedo,El Primo) (df01) | A Dwarf Sitting on the Floor (Don Sebastian de Morra) (df01) | Menippe (df02) | The Buffoon Don Cristobal de Castaneda y Pernia (Barbarroja) (df01) | Die Ubergabe von Breda.Ausschnitt:Die Beiden Feldherren | Related Artists: Francois Auguste Biard (1800-1882) , a French genre painter SANO di PietroItalian Early Renaissance Painter, 1406-1481 Anton mauveDutch Painter, 1838-1888
He came from a large family of clergymen in the province of North Holland. At the age of 16 he was apprenticed to the animal painter Pieter Frederik van Os (1808-92): animals (especially sheep, but also cows and horses) became Mauve's preferred theme. He then trained for a few months with Wouterus Verschuur, who gave him his love of horses, in the style, at least, of Paulus Potter and Philips Wouwerman.
